The Science and Genetics of Pore Size

Pores are tiny openings in the skin that allow sweat and sebum (natural oils) to reach the surface. While everyone has pores, their size can vary significantly from person to person. The appearance of pores is a common concern in skincare, particularly when they seem larger or more prominent.

I'm sorry to say but the simple answer to the question "how do I  make pores smaller?"  is, you can't.

Pore size is largely determined by genetics. If your parents have large pores, you're more likely to have them too. However, other factors also influence pore size:

  1. Sebum Production: Oily skin tends to have more visible pores because excess sebum can accumulate and stretch the pore walls.
  2. Age: As we age, collagen production decreases, leading to less skin elasticity. This loss of firmness can make pores appear larger.
  3. Sun Damage: Prolonged sun exposure can thicken the skin, leading to larger pores. UV rays also break down collagen and elastin, which help keep pores tight.
  4. Clogging: When pores are clogged with dirt, oil, or dead skin cells, they can appear larger.

How to Minimize the Appearance of Pores

While you can't change your pore size, there are ways to make them appear smaller and I think this is what people actually mean when they ask this question. Here are the top 5 things I recommend:

  1. Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells that can clog pores, making them appear smaller. Use chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid or glycolic acid for effective results.
  2. Retinoids: These vitamin A derivatives increase cell turnover and boost collagen production, helping to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of pores. If you can get a prescription for tretinoin, DO IT.
  3. Niacinamide: Also known as Vitamin B3, niacinamide can regulate oil production and improve skin elasticity, leading to smaller-looking pores.
  4. Clay Masks: These masks can absorb excess oil and temporarily reduce the appearance of pores by tightening the skin.
  5. Sunscreen: Preventing sun damage with a broad-spectrum SPF can maintain skin elasticity and prevent pores from appearing larger over time.

While genetics play a significant role in determining pore size, consistent skincare can help minimize their appearance. By incorporating exfoliation, retinoids, niacinamide, and sun protection into your routine, you can keep your skin smooth and your pores less noticeable. Remember, though, that healthy skin isn't about perfection-it's about balance and care <3
