Back To Basics Beauty Series: How to Choose the Right Foundation Formula and Shade + Brand Reccomendations

One of the first makeup items we all buy is foundation. It's also one of the makeup items people say they struggle with the most. Finding the perfect foundation can feel overwhelming with all the choices out there! Believe me, working as a makeup artist, you have to know all the in's and out's of foundation. I'm Meg Ann Lee, a makeup artist and hair stylist in the Eau Claire area  and I knew when I started this "back to basics beauty series", I had to include this topic. I believe selecting the right foundation comes down to understanding three key elements: your undertone, skin type, and preferred finish. Let's break it down step-by-step so you can find your ideal match!

Identify Your Undertone

Your undertone is the natural hue beneath the surface of your skin, and it's key to picking the right foundation shade. Undertones come in three main categories:

  • Cool: Your skin has a pink, red, or bluish tint. You might burn easily in the sun, and silver jewelry looks best on you.
  • Warm: You have a golden, yellow, or peach hue. You may tan easily, and gold jewelry complements your skin tone.
  • Neutral: You have a balance of both warm and cool tones. You may notice a mix of pink and yellow undertones in your skin.

Just because you figure out you undertone on your wrists DO NOT color match to your wrists or even your face! Use your neck and chest area to determine your shade.

Tip: An easy way to check your undertone is to look at the veins on your wrist. If they appear blue or purple, you're likely cool-toned. If they look greenish, you're warm-toned. If it's hard to tell, you might be neutral.

Choose the Right Finish for Your Skin Type

Foundation finishes range from matte to dewy, and selecting the best one depends on your skin type.

  • Dry Skin:If your skin tends to feel tight or flaky, go for a hydrating, dewy, or luminous foundation. These formulas will give you a glow and help your skin look fresh throughout the day.
  • Oily Skin:A matte or semi-matte finish is best for controlling shine and helping your foundation last longer. These formulas absorb excess oil and keep your skin looking smooth.
  • Combination Skin:If you have an oily T-zone but dry cheeks, try a satin or natural finish. These provide a soft glow without being too heavy or too matte.

Don't forget to consider the season. You may prefer a dewy finish in the winter when skin is drier, and switch to a matte or satin finish in the summer to combat humidity. I always tell people that this option in makeup finish is ALL personal preference. I almost NEVER choose a matte. I want my skin SLICK and GLOWY and that's just my personal preference.
