The Secret of Santa

Santa Claus. The jolly old man himself. The secret we keep from our children to keep the Christmas magic alive. When do you tell your kids the truth about Santa? I may not be the best person to give this advice because I told my son he wasn't real basically right away. Now, before I get any hate, there were a ton of reasons why I made this decision.

When my son was born I was young. We didn't have a lot of money. I was working at minimum wage jobs just trying to keep us afloat. I thought about all the kids getting expensive gifts for Christmas and it broke my heart that I couldn't provide that for him. I didn't want him to question if Santa hated him and that's why he didn't get super extravagant presents.

Along with that reason I really believe it made him extremely grateful. We got to show him to joy of giving gifts. Not just receiving them. When we grew and I finally could afford more expensive things we started donating gifts and it helped him understand why. After all, if Santa was real why would we have to donate toys to kids in need if Santa comes to everyone's house?

Now that we have a blended family and my partners daughters believe in Santa my son LOVES to play along. He loves to keep the magic alive for them. He knows not to spoil the secret for others.

I've been seeing a ton of controversy regarding Santa Claus lately. I promise you that it didn't take the magic of Christmas away. When you decide to tell your kids the biggest Christmas secret of all they will be fine. Hell, drag it out as long as you can. Milk that naughty and nice list. I'm all for bribing your kids with Santa Claus. Do whatever is best for your kids and your family. And have a very Merry Christmas, whether it's your putting presents under the tree or Santa Claus this year.

Cheers,
