Why Underconsumption Is the Hottest Trend of 2025 And How to Embrace It

Hey everyone! Meg Ann Lee here, and this week we're diving into one of the biggest lifestyle trends of 2025-underconsumption. I've been on my no-buy challenge since November 2024, so let's just say, this trend speaks to my soul (and my bank account). If you're feeling the urge to hit reset on your spending or just want to cut back on all the stuff cluttering your life, this post is for you!

What Is Underconsumption?Underconsumption is basically the anti-haul. It's all about resisting impulse buys, prioritizing quality over quantity, and embracing what you already have. Think of it as the opposite of the "I saw it on TikTok shop, so now I own 12 in different colors" mentality. And let's be honest-we've all bought a trendy outfit that never made it past the "maybe one day" section of our closet.

So, how can you hop on this trend and actually make it work for you? Here are my top three tips!

The "Cart Cool-Off" Rule

Before you buy anything online, leave it in your cart for 48 hours. If you still need it after that, great. If you totally forgot about it? That's your sign to let it go. I know this is hard with brands who sell out of styles at a rapid pace.. (hemmm FREE PEOPLE).... Do you know why they do that? To create a sense of URGENCY for the shopper. It's a mind trick babes.

Shop Your Own Closet (or Storage)

Remember that "must-have" jacket from 2023? Or the trendy sweater you swore you'd wear? Give them a second chance before buying more. Half the time, we already own  something very similar to the thing we're about to purchase.

Make a Fun Savings Goal

Instead of spending $20 on another coffee table candle (because, you know, vibes), stash that money away for something bigger-like a luxury service or just a "wow, look at my savings account" flex.

At the end of the day, cutting back on random spending isn't just good for the planet-it's good for your wallet, your space, and your sanity. So, let's normalize not panic-buying every viral product we see and get on this "no buy" challenge. Who's with me? <3
