Back to Basics: Fall Fashion, Food, and Aesthetic Must-Haves for 2024
Hey everyone, it's Meg Ann Lee and this week we are wrapping up my Back to Basics series with a Back to Basics: Fall Edition post. I thought a great way to end the basics series was to share all of my "Basic Girl" fall favorites with you. As we dive into fall 2024, it's time to embrace those cozy vibes and get ready for all things autumn. Whether you're all about pumpkin-spiced everything or a minimalist fall lover, this season's trends offer something for everyone. Let's explore what's big in fashion, food, and the essentials for a fall aesthetic.
Fashion & StyleÂ
Layering with Texture
This year, layering is more than just adding sweaters on top of turtlenecks. Word on the street is the texture of the season is SUEDE. It's about mixing textures and proportions. Think oversized blazers paired with form-fitting turtlenecks and wide-leg trousers. Don't be afraid to play with different lengths and fabric weights for a chic but cozy look. And if you're wondering where to find these colors and trends… THRIFTING. This season's trends are 100% in your thrift stores, go dig.
Rich Earthy Tones & Bold Accents
This fall, brown is the new black. The classic earth tones-caramel, deep browns, olive green-are still going strong, but this season, they're paired with bold accent colors like burnt orange, burgundy, and even pops of cobalt blue. Check out my Pinterest board for Inspo!
Statement Outerwear
Coats are having a moment! Whether it's a structured wool trench, a plush shearling-lined jacket, or a puffer with unexpected detailing, your outerwear is where you can make a serious statement. Look for interesting cuts, textures, and colors to stand out even on those dreary days.
Cozy Knits & Uggs
The ultimate fall girl look always starts with knits, and 2024 is no exception. Soft, oversized cardigans, chunky cable-knit sweaters, and fuzzy socks are fall staples. Look for unique stitching patterns and color-block designs to stay on trend.
The Ugg trend is still going hard this year, and I can't stop. You pair your Ugg's with leg warmers? DOUBLE POINTS FOR GRFYFFEDNDOR!
Treats
Pumpkin Spice 2.0
Of course, pumpkin spice isn't going anywhere, but in 2024, it's getting a refresh. We are seeing variations hitting menus with hints of chai, maple, and even savory takes on the beloved flavor. I stopped at Phoenix Coffee in Downtown Eau Claire and got a cute artsy fall drink!
Also, have you tried the Apple Crsip Energy Refresher from Caribou Coffee??? If you haven't, I'm so sorry because they are currently out of the flavor for the season and it was EVERYTHING MY BASIC FALL GIRL TASTEBUDS EVER DREAMED OF. Until next year, sigh*.
Locally Sourced & Sustainable Food
Farm-to-table dining continues to rise in popularity as more people become conscious of where their food comes from. Seasonal produce and sustainable sourcing will be key features on menus at your favorite fall cafés and restaurants. I love seeing local restaurants do this in Eau Claire, make sure to check out The Good Wives, The Lakely, 3rd & Vine and Coffee Grounds.

Candles & Scents
Nothing says fall like the scent of burning leaves, vanilla chai, or warm cinnamon. Candles with warm, spicy, or earthy notes will set the perfect autumn mood in your home. This year, candle jars are getting a modern twist with sleek, minimalistic designs to match your decor. We recently went to Fergusons Orchard and we stocked up in their gift shop! Their candle scents are perfect for a cozy fall night in.
If you are a DIY type try a stovetop potpourri!
