Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany, in 1810, as a celebration of the marriage between Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The public was invited to partake in festivities, which included horse races and food. The tradition continued annually, evolving into a global celebration of Bavarian culture, beer, and community. Today, Oktoberfest events worldwide preserve the festive spirit with live music, traditional games, and, of course, plenty of beer. Wisconsin’s own Oktoberfests in Chippewa Falls and La Crosse bring a slice of this history to the Midwest. 

Chippewa Falls

Chippewa Falls’ Oktoberfest, held on September 20th and 21st at the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, is a lively celebration of German heritage. The festival features four stages of entertainment, traditional competitions like stein holding and sauerkraut eating, kids’ activities, and authentic foods. Visitors can enjoy locally-brewed beers like Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest and Festbier. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s going on:

Friday, September 20

• Gates open at 11am.
• The Golden Keg Procession and announcement of the Festmeister and Festmeisterin at noon.
• Live music, dancing, and traditional German contests like stein holding and sauerkraut eating.

Saturday, September 21

• Gates open at 11am.
• Four stages of entertainment all day.
• Family-friendly activities, crafts, games, and more traditional contests.

La Crosse

We’re also very lucky to have the longest-running Oktoberfest in the Midwest a short trip away – since 1961! Happening this year from September 26th to 28th, La Crosse’s Oktoberfest offers activities and entertainment for everyone! The festival kicks off with craft beer night, featuring over 20 craft brewers. Throughout the weekend, enjoy competitions like the lederhosen games, stein holding finals, and fireworks on Saturday night. Here’s a teaser of what to expect:

Thursday, September 26

• Gates open at 4pm (until midnight)
• Craft Beer Night: Sample from over 20 craft brewers.
• Lederhosen Games: Barrel rolls, stein races, scavenger hunts, and more.
• Live Music:
  • 5-8 pm: Brian Brueggen & The Mississippi Valley Dutchmen
  • 8-11:30 pm: Good for Gary

Friday, September 27

• Fest grounds open at 9:30am (until midnight)
• Stein Holding Finals: 10am
• Opening Ceremony: 11am with the traditional tapping of the Golden Keg.
• More Lederhosen Games: 2-4 pm
• Live Music: Local performers throughout the day.

Saturday, September 28

• Grounds open at 11am (until midnight)
• Fireworks: 9pm
• Medallion Hunt: A fun treasure hunt for a hidden medallion.
